Reading 3: Animation Overview

by Mike Gleicher on January 22, 2013

To get a quick overview of the basic topics of animation, I’d like everyone to read the Animation Chapter of the 559 textbook.

“Chapter 17: Computer Animation” by Michael Ashikman. In Foundations of Computer Graphics, 3e. by Shirley and Marschner et. al.

(note: if you have the 2nd edition of the textbook, the chapter is the same, except its 16).

I’ve placed a copy in the protected course reader here.

This chapter gives a quick tour of a bunch of different basic topics in Computer Animation. Many we’ll come back to and discuss at length. (rotations, principles, motion capture, …). The goal here is not to get the details (don’t expect to understand quaternions from the brief description) – but just to give it a quick read since it will introduce a lot of the terms we’ll use a lot this semester.

There is no “writing” assignment for this reading, but please read the chapter before class on February 1st.
