Seek and Find 7: Name that Encoding! (and redesign it)

By now you know the drill for a seek-and-find assignment. Except that we’ll try to change it for this week.

You still can find something new – but you are also welcome to use some visualization from a prior seek and find (even if someone else was the one to post it).

This time, we’re going to ask for a little more analysis though. So pick one that will be interesting to analyze.

Pick a visualization that uses encodings beyond position and color. Probably it will use position and color as well, but it should add something else. Or pick a visualization that encodes at least 4 variables (so if its using just the 3 cues of position and color, it must be doing something clever).

With the visualization, in addition to describing what the visualization is (the usual stuff): Explain what the encodings are. And assess why this is (or isn’t) a good choice for the particular variable. And then, describe an alternate encoding of the same data. (if you want to add a sketch that’s great – but not required). How is your re-design better/worse?
