Lectures and Lecture Material

In person lectures are cancelled. See the (Updated 3/19) Plan for Class as Part of the COVID-19 Response.

Lectures will be provided by video. You are responsible for the material.

Lectures are required. You should come to class.

It is our intent to provide a copy of the lecture slides. These are not a replacement for attending lecture. They can be helpful in reminding you what was discussed.

Some of the material will be presented on the chalkboard. This won’t be in the slides, and it may be difficult to see on video.

For the slides, they will often be empty (or have empty spaces) so the instructor can draw on them. They are designed to complement the lecture, not to stand by themselves.

I will try to provide “preview” slides before class - some students like to see what I intend to use, and to take notes on the slides. I will also try to provide the slides “after” class - these should include my drawings, and I may re-order them or change them to better capture what happens in class.

When available, the slides will be placed on Canvas in the “files” section. There is a folder Lecture Notes (preview before Lecture) and Lecture Notes (after Lecture).

You should not rely on slides being available. For example, sometimes there may be technical problems where the drawings aren’t saved. Or, there may be other reasons why we may not be able to make them available.

We also intend to record the lectures using the classroom’s lecture capture system. These videos aren’t great - but they are better than nothing.

You should not rely on videos being available. There are often technical glitches or other problems that prevent us from posting videos. Links to class videos will be made available on Canvas.

There is a Canvas page with links to the available videos and post-class slides.
